An intriguing character in the Kite
Runner, Ali is Hassan’s father and also a servant of Baba’s house. Physically
hindered in many ways Ali has a paralysis of the lower face muscles meaning he
is unable to smile. He also has a disfigured leg, twisted with very little
muscle caused by a bout of polio. His disfigurements scares many children in the
neighborhood and they taunt him by calling him Babalu or Boogeyman. Ali is a
very kind and gentle character, which makes it particularly difficult when the
reader finds out that Baba, supposedly Ali’s friend is actually the father of
Hassan. This is heightened when it is realized Ali is sterile and so he must be
aware Hassan is not biologically his son.
