Three Motifs: 1st Motif

Sexual Abuse:

Probably the most disturbing recurring motif is that of sexual abuse throughout the novel. Beginning with Assef’s rape of Hassan, the pain it cause Hassan emotionally but also its effects on Amir are particularly important for driving conflict in the book. This rape causes Amir much guilt as he does not intervene, instead just peers down the alleyway. This rape is contrasted by Amir's heroic rescue of Sohrab after his prolonged abuse while in Assef's clutches.
